I was in Eighth Grade when I got the part of Shrek. This was my second Wooster Middle School Play. I was so excited. I felt a lot of pressure to get it right. I worked hard on my singing, but I worked even harder on delivery. It was important to me to be the character as best I could. Shrek is a complicated character. He's lonely and sensitive, but he's also grumpy and aggressive. He's a sympathetic figure. I was teased a lot when I was younger so I related to him being an outsider that longs to be on the inside. He finds it hard to believe that anyone could ever love him because he doesn't give himself enough credit for the good that he can do. Being Shrek was a thrilling journey for me.
